All you need to know for now is that "the texas chainsaw acoustic hour" officially debuted in 1997 after a brief transition from KWVA's first acoustic program "Dogs Run Free, which I co-hosted in its second incarnation.

Grand opening coming soon (as soon as I figure out how to draw
and upload balloon animals).

True Story: True Stories R Us was closed this week as it prepares for
an inventory overstock sale. Seems that the buyers went wild over the past
several years in anticipation that the current administration would become
regular customers. I guess Halliburton got that gig, too (breaks my Republican
heart to have typed that one).

Fun Fact: if you Google Halliburton, you get spellings with both one L and Two
LL variations. Never much payed attention to it before; I went with the New
Yorker spelling. My apologies to Mr. Cheney if I chose the wrong one (I already
have a big enough HS file, thank you very much).

the program for 24 September, 2005

Didn't make a copy of the playlist this week...will reconstruct from memory.
Now, what was it I was going to do???

Chapter One: What with all the bad stuff going on these days, thought it best
to open with an affirmation...

Darrel Scott/It's A Great Day to Be Alive/Aloha from Nashville

Chapter Two: Draw (or paint) your own conclusions on this set...Submit to me; I
like to look at pictures

Tim O'Brien/Moses/Cornbread Nation
Cary Swinney/Bigshots/Big Shots
Eliza Gilkyson/Man of God/Paradise Hotel
Peter Mulvey/29 Cent Head/Kitchen Radio

Chapter Three: I forgot one of the tracks in this two track set...Musta been
something I grabbed from the station files...

Wildfire/Ballad of Forty Dollars/Rattle of the Chains
(still haven't gotten around to listening this...but it's almost impossible to
go wrong with a Tom T. Hall song)

Chapter Four:

Radio Special: No Direction Home (Part One)

Chapter Five??? (there may have been another short set here...)

Chapter Five-A: Can't think of a better gift to give to a music lover...

Joel Mabus/Swanee/Parlor Guitar
Joel Mabus/Sobre Las Olas/Parlor Guitar

I believe it was here that I attempted to play an interesting-looking oud disc
from the KWVA stacks...thrice detracked on one player; twice on another. Pulled
it and, upon further review (sorry, football season, you know) discovered a
crack (well beyond hairline fracture quality) running nearly the radius of the
disc.

Chapter Six: Your Comment Here_______________

Bobo Stenson+Anders Jormin+Paul Motian/Sudan/Goodbye
(the classic ECM sound...the handoff host and I had a great off-air conversation
about contrasts between Windham Hill and ECM discs)
Charlie Haden+Jan Garbarek+Egberto Gismonti/Bodas De Prata/Folk Songs
(a classic from the ECM collection)

Planet Soup playlist: 18 September, 2005

Returned the favor by hosting KWVA's world music program "Planet Soup." The
program's regular host often sits in for me. Attempted a combination of our
programs...

Had one of my best moments as a radio host. Ended the program with an erhu
piece, partially because I wanted to hear it and partially because the program
that follows is an Asian pop music show and I try to do something approaching a
transition.

To my surprise the piece was a well-known piece. To the incoming host's
surprise, I played the song. I got to sit in the studio and listen to him sing
all the lyrics to the instrumental version I played.

Planet Soup for 18 September, 2005

Brave Combo/Dance of the Hours, Parts 1 and 2/Box of Ghosts

Juan Carlos Quintero/Cumbia para los Bandidos (de amour)/

The program for 17 September, 2005

I
Eric Hisaw/Dance With the Prettiest Girl/Never Could Walk the Line

Eric is still a favorite..he can rock but he can also write

II
Jimmie Dale Gilmore/Just the Wave, Not the Water/best o'
Marti Brom/Alone at a Table for Two/Heartache Numbers
Rick Shea y Patty Booker/You Take Me For Granted/Our Shangri-LA

Got in trouble with set...a listener wasn't happy with steel guitars appearing
on an acoustic program...or maybe just not used to good country stuff...If Kinky
becomes king of Texas, I am supporting Mari for queen.

III
Eliza Gilkyson/Jedidiah 1777/Paradise Hotel
Eliza Gilkyson/When You Walk On/Paradise Hotel

IV
Steve Earle/Willin//Sidetracks
Steve Earle/My Uncle/Sidetracks

Found a copy of this at "the other station" and commandeered (hey, it passed
spell check) it for this program. A nod to the older skew in my listenership.
"Uncle" has always been a fave protest song.

V
Dave Van Ronk/Buckets of Rain/And the Tin Pan...
Terry Robb/Madison Avenue Shuffle/Resting Place
James Booker/St. James Infirmary/Resurrection of the Bayou Maharajah
Professor Longhair/Tipitina/Atlantic Piano Blues (compiliation)

Sorta blues set, featuring regional hotshot guitarist Robb in an acoustic
setting and an appropriate pairing of Booker and Longhair

VI
Joel Mabus/Alexander's Ragtime Band/Parlor Guitar
Joel Mabus/Tiger Rag/Parlor Guitar
Joel Mabus/Grand Old Flag/Parlor Guitar

Can't say enough good things about this disc. Won't try. Play it until it
wears out.

VII
Andy Statman y Enrique Coria/Impromptu/Tone Poets
Don Stiernberg y John Carlini/Moonlight in Vermont/Tone Poets
David Grisman y Tony Rice/Blues for Vassar/Tone Poets

Tracks from the duets disc of this two-disc set. Variety in performance and it
all sounds so good

VIII
Mike Marshall/Corrente in Dminor/Tone Poets
Jerry Douglas/Down in the Willow Garden/Tone Poets
Evan Marshall/Joyful Variations/Tone Poets

Went with no-brainer choices from the solo disc of the set

IX
Hobart Smith/Buck Creek Girls/In Sacred Trust
Hobart Smith/Cumberland Gap/In Sacred Trust
Hobart Smith/Old Joe Clark/In Sacred Trust

Fidelity issues aside, some amazing playing that must drive players nuts trying
to replicate

X
Mike Stevens/Jerusalem Ridge/The World's Only Air
Flatt y Scruggs/Randy Lynne Rag/Foggy Mountain Jamboree
Flatt y Scruggs/Pray for the Boys/Foggy Mountain Jamboree

Sorry Mrs. Reagan, but you can't just say no to bluegrass harp and revisiting
Flatt and Scruggs reminds of the brilliance of their work.

XI
Old and in the Grey/Honky Tonk Women/self-titled

Not really a fan of this disc, but it certainly annoyed the upcoming host.

the texas chainsaw acoustic hour
Saturday 0900-1100 (Pacific)
KWVA, 88.1, Eugene, OR
listen: for a lasting, pleasurable experience
contact: the government says no, but I know people who swear they have been
abducted

true story: A certain Mr. Brown (one who has been in the national news of late)
has been returned to Washington (in baseball, I believe the parallel term is
"designated for reassignment" which I also believe, though I may have this
wrong, actually means, in two(?) weeks you will be out of a job). His new
duties: dealing with victims of "the texas chainsaw acoustic hour."

(editor's note: this is probably an appropriate assignment as many have
suggesting that there is far too much horsing around on the program)

the program for 10 September, 2005

I can be accused of mailing this one in (but I am not worried. In our
community, we don't even prosecute most theft and drug crime due to budget cuts
and court system overload).

Section one breaks absolutely no ground, old or new. Section Two is out of my
hands with the exception of the top of the hour legal id. Section Three is the
exception: two pieces approaching the "is that music?" category, an absolutely
beautiful piece, and a bit o' the manic.

Johnny Cash/Ring of Fire/Classic Cash

Kris Kristofferson/The Pilgrim: Chapter 33/The Austin Sessions
Jim Ringer/Saginaw, Michigan/Best O'

Peter Jennings/The King Reigns/The Century
Elvis/Mystery Train/Sun Sessions
Dwight Yoakam/Little Sister/dwightyoakamacoustic.net

Steve Earle/Country Girl/The Hard Way
The Knitters/The House I Call Home/The Modern Sounds of the Knitters

Johnny Cash/The Legend, Part One

Derek Bailey/The Fourth Track/Solo Guitar, Volume Two
Herbie Hancock/Ravel's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in G: Second Movement
Dave Holland y Barre Phillips/Raindrops/Music From Two Basses
Musikas/Meral las sucsardas es szapora/The Bartok Album
